BOCES Board of Education

Like public school systems, the Capital Region BOCES is governed by a policy-making board of education. The 10 members of our board serve three-year terms and are elected by our component boards of education through a special vote held each April. In order to qualify for the BOCES Board, members must be eligible voters in one of our component school districts. For more information about running for the BOCES Board, call Assistant District Superintendent for Management Services, Mark Jones at (518) 862-4920.

BOCES Board members represent and are accountable to our component school boards. The duties and responsibilities of the Board members include:

  • Providing shared educational services to our component schools.

  • Conducting needs assessments and long-range planning for BOCES and our component school districts.

  • Employing teachers and support staff to carry out BOCES programs.

  • Preparing an annual BOCES budget and overseeing expenditures throughout the year.

  • Setting policies for the organization and plans for future growth and change.

  • Appointing district superintendents (subject to the approval of the Commissioner of Education).

The BOCES District Superintendent works closely with the members of the board to implement state laws and board policies and directions.
