An innovative program is benefiting students at two local institutions — Tech Valley High School and The Sage Colleges.

Launched earlier this year, the tutoring program matches college students in work study programs with TVHS students in need of assistance with a subject.

The program is the brainchild of TVHS teacher Jen Hower and Andrea Pike, library commons specialist at The Sage Colleges.

"It came about through a brainstorm session between Andrea and I on how to better help the students. It's sort of in a trial run stage right now, but we expect it to expand in the fall tutors in the class and after school," said Hower.

Presently, the college students meet with TVHS students during school hours, but when students are in individual work time (study halls).

Pike said the Sage students are all pursuing different degrees — Chinese studies, physics, math and physical therapy, though some have expressed an interest in teaching. The Sage students taking part are: Hannah Wade, Abigail Feliciano, Jocelyn Stoddard and Tim Madden.
