Thomas Mott has joined the Capital Region BOCES staff as its new facilities director, filling the position of Dan Haggerty, who is retiring.
Mott has been the park manager at the 2,500-acre Saratoga Spa State Park for the past eight years. His responsibilities included the oversight of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), two golf courses, Catherines Restaurant, the Saratoga Automobile Museum, the National Museum of Dance, Gideon Putnam Hotel and Roosevelt Baths and Spa. He also managed Peebles Island State Park and Grafton Lakes State Park for interim periods.
Mott is from Binghamton and worked at Broome-Tioga BOCES for 12 years, where he developed curriculum and taught classes in carpentry, plumbing and heating, electrical, masonry, horticulture and alternative energy. His professional experience also includes seven years as the operations manager for the Southern Tier Zoological Society in Binghamton and as the owner/operator of his own small construction company.
In his new position, Mott will be responsible for cleaning, maintenance and repair, facilities management and construction supervision of BOCES buildings and grounds.
Gregg Diefenbach, deputy director of administrative and
management services, said both Motts work as a BOCES
teacher and as a park manager made him stand out as a candidate.
"When you think about the Saratoga Spa Park, you think its
beautiful and well-kept. You dont see the workers and yet the
buildings are immaculate and well-kept ... If he can do all that,
hes worth hiring."
Hayley Gunderson, an assistant actuary at Capital Region BOCES, worked for Mott at Saratoga Spa Park and said, "Working for Tom Mott was a pleasure. He is a true people person by definition. Im excited to see such a knowledgeable, helpful and kind person work here at Capital Region BOCES. Im sure Tom will be a great asset to our team."
Mott describes himself as an easy-going person who likes to
talk and get to know others. In his spare time, he kayaks, canoes,
skis (cross-country and downhill), camps and travels. This spring, hes planning a trip to the Caribbean Islands. Mott begins
his job at BOCES on Nov. 2.
