Annual
Tech Valley Summer Camp, July 14-18, introduces middle
school students to tech careers in the region
Twenty-four
middle school students will get a firsthand look at the
technologies and careers in the Tech Valley region at
Tech Valley Summer Camp, a joint initiative of Questar
III and Capital Region BOCES. In its fifth year, the
camp will run July 14-18 with a pre-camp celebration on
July 8 hosted at Capital Communications Federal
Credit Union.
Each day of camp will be hosted by a different site partnering with
the camp. This year, students will work along side
professionals at the University at Albany College of
Nanoscale Science and Engineering, Vicarious Visions,
Tech Valley High School, M+W Zander and GEN*NY*SIS
Cancer Research Center.

BOCES
Board appoints Briggs McAndrews as interim director of
the School Support Services division
At
its meeting on June 16, the BOCES Board of Education appointed J. Briggs McAndrews
as interim director of the School Support Services (SSS)
division, effective July 1, 2008. Peter Kopcha will
retire as SSS Director on July 4 after 37 years of service to BOCES.

Assemblyman Pete Lopez addresses CTE students at annual
awards ceremony on June 16; notes "the skills you are
learning are lifesaving"
On June
16, nearly 100 juniors and seniors from Career & Tech's
Schoharie campus marched across the stage at the Holiday Inn
Express to accept a variety of awards and certificates for a
job well done. As they did, they were greeted by
Assemblyman Pete Lopez, who congratulated them for their
“accomplishments and personal growth.”

and grads shine at this year's Very Special Prom 2008
More than 150 Capital
Region BOCES special education students, alumni and their guests
spruced up and stepped out for a night of food, fun and
dance at this year's Very Special Prom, held on May 9 at the
Best Western Sovereign Hotel in Albany.

Joint BOCES
report card to include 21st century skills performance
indicators, provide improved accountability
Questar
III, Capital Region BOCES, Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES
and Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES
introduced plans for a joint BOCES report card measuring
21st Century Skills at a conference in April. The event is sponsored by the four BOCES
as part of their ongoing regional Call to Action initiative.

Virtual Business student honored as Outstanding Business Ed
Student, Capital Region Scholar, 40 Under 40 Future Business
Leader
ShaQuayah
Graham, a senior in BOCES Career and Technical School's
International Virtual Business
program and at Guilderland High School, has been named a
Capital Region Outstanding Business Student, Capital Region
Scholar and 40 Under 40 Future Business Leader. The awards
are presented by the Business & Marketing Educators'
Association of the Capital District; the the Capital Area
School Development Association, SUNY Albany and the Times
Union; and the Capital District Business Review,
respectively.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing student
receives kudos at RIT's
National Science Fair
Kayla
Thornton, an 8th grade
student in the
BOCES
Deaf and Hard of Hearing program,
competed with students from
around the country in Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT)
third-annual National Science Fair for Deaf and
Hard-of-Hearing Students in March. Thornton was selected to
receive a second place award of
$300 and a commemorative plaque
for her work on a project about the effect shampoo-based
chemicals such as formaldehyde and sodium laurel sulfate can
have on hair and health. Visit the

Local school boards approve BOCES
2008-09 administrative budget and elect four to BOCES Board On April 21, the school boards of the BOCES 24 component
school districts voted 23-1 to approve the $6.8 million
administrative budget for 2008-2009. As a result, the
average assessment increase to component districts is 2.9
percent for 2008-2009, the same as the current year. School
boards also elected incumbents Sandra Beloncik, John
Bergeron, John Phelan and John Yagielski to three-year terms
beginning July 1.

Charles S.
Dedrick named BOCES District Superintendent
At
a special meeting on April 9, the Capital Region Board of
Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) Board of Education
appointed Charles S. Dedrick to the position of district
superintendent of Capital Region BOCES. Dedrick, an
experienced educator who has been school superintendent of
the Cohoes City School District for the last nine years,
will begin his new p osition on June 9, 2008.
“When I think of the great educational leaders who came before me
in this position and the outstanding reputation of Capital
Region BOCES, I am truly honored to have been chosen as the
next leader of this organization,” said Dedrick.

Administrators and
teachers interested in learning more about the 21st Century
skills and experiencing the Tech Valley High School
educational model are welcome to attend the high school's
Summer Institute program on July 8.

Summer
Assess ment Institute
How well are we
preparing students to be successful in learning and thinking
skills?
A three-day, collaborative
workshop
conducted by data analysts from the BOCES Joint Management
Team (JMT) will answer this question and help develop tools
that district leaders can use to accurately assess student
learning and thinking skills and transform teaching. The
Summer Assessment Institute will be held July 23-25 at
Mechanicville Middle School. The three-day program is
designed for teachers and administrators who are familiar
with the 21st Century Skills research and are ready to
review and development assessment tools.
