This school year, students in the Fundamental Skills Instruction (FSI)/ College  Transition Program have begun work on “Re-Creation: The Next Generation.” This collaborative work will include art pieces made entirely from reclaimed and recyclable objects and students' writing.

Trash becomes students' treasure

Students at the College of Saint Rose are taking their recycling efforts to new and creative levels by turning trash into art.

Since last year, students in the Fundamental Skills Instruction (FSI)/College Transition Program have been creating thematic art pieces from magazine clippings, craft supplies and other objects found at home and on campus. Each collage is housed in reclaimed CD jewel cases.

The project, which students are excited to work at weekly, was the inspiration of BOCES teaching assistant Susan Jadlos.

“I really liked the concept of helping the students create something beautiful from items that were already on hand,” explains Jadlos.

Last school year, the students compiled individual pieces within a large wooden frame. The finished piece called “Re-Creation” is a colorful collage that reflects each student’s personality and creativity and many happy memories from the school year. It was admired as it hung on display at the Capital Region BOCES student art show last spring and was also shown at the 2009 Fence Show Salon at the Arts Center of the Capital Region.
